Editorial cartoonist Tony Auth is coming to NewsWorks

Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Tony Auth has left the Philadelphia Inquirer and is coming to NewsWorks.

Chris Satullo, WHYY’s Vice President for News and Civic Engagement, said that in April, Auth would become “digital artist in residence” for NewsWorks and WHYY.

In an email to the news staff, Satullo said Auth’s national political cartoons won’t be published on NewsWorks. Those cartoons will continue to be available through syndication.

Satullo said Auth will be illustrating feature pieces on NewsWorks, as well as doing animated drawings and audio slideshows.

The goal, Satullo said, is to give Auth a palette for visual experimentation online.

“Probably the very best idea for how to use his enormous skills has not occurred to any of us, because it will emerge from the process of doing what we do,” Satullo said in his email.

Auth, who joined the Inquirer in 1971, has won just about every award a political cartoonist can win, including a Pulitzer in 1976.

Auth’s residency will be funded in part through a grant from the Thomas Skelton Harrison Foundation.
