Edision, NJ teen takes silver in chemistry international competition

A 17-year-old teen from Edison, New Jersey took the silver medal in an international competition… and it had nothing to do with a sport, rather science.

The New Jersey teenager earned the prestigious honor at the 43rd International Chemistry Olympiad in Ankara, Turkey.

In a story from The Star-Ledger, Elmer Tan and three others represented the American team, which won two gold and two silver medals.

Tan told reporter Sue Epstein he’s been interested in chemsitry since the fifth grade.

For Tan, the competition began on the local level before he made an appearance on the international stage.  Tan’s teammates included a member from California and Konstantin Borisov of Wexler, Pennsylvania.
