Delaware State’s new provost backs out before starting new gig

Two days before his first day on the job, Delaware State’s new provost called it quits.
James Ammons, a Florida A&M University professor, backed out of accepting his new position. He made DSU leaders aware of his decision to remain as a faculty member in Tallahassee over the weekend.
In an email, DSU spokesman Carlos Holmes said, “No specific reason,” was given as to why the former Florida A&M president changed his mind last minute.
Following a months-long search, Ammons was chosen to lead the academic agenda at Delaware’s only historically black university in May.
Holmes said DSU will conduct another national search to find a new replacement for Alton Thompson, who resigned in March, shortly after the university announced it was cutting 23 of its low-enrollment programs.
