Del. DOT to hold meetings on Del. 1 widening

The Delaware Department of Transportation is planning public workshops in Bear to hear input on a multi-year plan to widen Del. 1.

The News Journal reports the $180 million plan would add one lane in each direction to the highway between Del. 273 and the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal’s south side.Construction is not likely to start on the 9.5-mile stretch before 2015.

The transportation department is holding information sessions starting Monday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sessions are planned at Leasure Elementary School and Wilbur Elementary School in Bear.

Highway officials have said the work is needed to ease traffic congestion and improve safety. An average of 80,000 vehicles a day travel Del. 1 in the area.
