New Covenant Church may offer daycare during the week

New Covenant Church of Philadelphia is looking to expand its daycare service.

Members of the Mt. Airy-based church went before the West Mt. Airy Neighbors Zoning Committee Wednesday night to seek approval for running its daycare during the work week.

New Covenant, which sits on a 30-acre campus at 7500 Germantown Ave., already offers daycare during church services on Sunday.

Albert Blackstock, chief financial officer at New Covenant, told the committee that the church would like to offer daycare services Monday through Friday for children aged six weeks to two-and-a-half-years. Daycare on those days would run roughly between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The facility can accommodate up to 30 children, but the capacity would likely be set lower than that, said Blackstock.

While concerns about possible traffic congestion were raised, no neighbors in attendance opposed the request.

The committee also approved and agreed to send a letter of support to the city’s Zoning Board of Adjustment, who will have the final say in the matter.

Church officials have a ZBA hearing on Nov. 27.
