Darby youth basketball league working with township to resume play

A summer youth basketball league in Darby Township, next to Philadelphia, hopes to have kids back on the court by next week.

Darby Township solicitor Michael Pierce said organizers of the basketball league did not go through the necessary process of applying for a permit and acquiring insurance.

“There were questions about the permitting — which is the normal course — there needs to be insurance and waivers in place and none of that had gone through,” he said Friday.

Pierce said he’s trying to work with the organizers to iron out the problem.

“I don’t think that they fully realize that there were implications of running such an organized league if anybody got hurt or spectators got hurt or there was a problem on the court — that type of thing,” he said.

Pierce said it’s important to follow the protocol so there’s a safe environment for the kids to play.
