A key Jersey Shore bridge is not going to be open in time for the Memorial Day Weekend.

Crews just can’t get the work done in time despite putting in 12 hour days.

Cape May County Engineer Dale Foster said after defects were found in the bridge between Sea Isle City and Avalon they went to work immediately and are still trying to complete repairs.

“We’re in the process of installing new 24 inch diameter steel pipe piles, they are about 160 feet long that we’re installing.  It’s been very difficult to install them because of the conditions out there, the swift currents, waves.”

Foster said the fix is not going to be done by Memorial Day weekend.

“We’re trying as best as we can we want to get it open as soon as possible, it could be the middle of June, it could be the end of June. It all depends on how we get these piles in,  get it framed into the existing pier there.”

The closure creates a 16 mile detour for people closest to the bridge, a problem for residents and businesses alike.
