Well. That statement has sparked quite the kerfuffle. In right-wing circles, it’s simply not appropriate to praise a transformative black leader who erased institutional racism after spending 27 years busting rocks in jail. There’s no way that Cruz’s fans in Trollville would stomach such betrayal and blasphemy; within minutes, they manned their keyboards and indulged their ids. What follows is a representative small sampling – especially the grammar, the generosity of spirit, and the…um…intellectual rigor.

Imagine what they’re thinking today, with the news that Cruz will attend the Mandela funeral. One is almost tempted to feel bad for Cruz; there he was on Facebook, exuding a sense of decency, and getting trashed for it by his own trolls. But, actually, this was a classic case of rough justice — as some posters on the thread smartly observed.

One guy, addressing Cruz, wrote: “You have consistently made your bed on the far Right, and now you must sleep with this kind of virtriol.”

Another guy, also addressing Cruz: “Take note that the hateful, racist comments regarding Mr. Mandela come from those who hold you in high regard. You reap what you sow.”

You reap what you sow … Indeed. With respect to Cruz getting his just desserts, not even John Donne can compete with the King James Bible.
