Crusader Classic set for Oct. 6

From the Friends of Father Judge High School:

The Eleventh “Crusader Classic” 5K Run/1 Mile Fun Walk will be held on Sunday, Oct. 6  at 9:00 a.m., rain or shine.

This year’s proceeds will benefit the Lt. Robert Neary Scholarship Fund. Neary, FJ ‘70 and a Philadelphia firefighter, was tragically killed in the line of duty. Our goal is to raise $10,000. Funds raised by the Crusader Classis 5K Run are used to provide partial scholarships to deserving students who may otherwise be unable to attend Father Judge.

The run will begin at The Band shell in Pennypack Park (off Rhawn Street near Rowland Avenue) and proceed along the bike path to Rowland Avenue and through the Father Judge High School parking lot, finishing with a lap on the track. Race day registration will be held in the Father Judge parking lot beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Entry fees are $30 for adults and $15 for students. This year, $5 of each adult entry will go to the Semper Fi Fund, a national nonprofit set up to provide immediate financial support for injured and critically ill members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.

Blankets will also be collected for Kensington’s St. Francis Inn, which aids the poor and homeless. Blankets may be dropped off in the Father Judge schoolyard between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Runners, walkers and sponsors are all needed to make this event a success. Long-sleeved performance T-shirts will be provided to all pre-registrants and while they last on race day. All sponsors will be recognized on the back of the T-shirts worn by runners/walkers.

The overall male winner will receive the “Our 27”  Award in memory of the 27 Father Judge graduates who gave their lives in Vietnam, and the overall female winner will receive the Nadine McCaffrey Award in honor of a beloved long-time employee of Father Judge.

Medals will be presented to the first- through third-place male and female age group finishers.  The awards ceremony will be held in the school parking lot following the Run.
