Corbett apologizes for likening same-sex marriage to incest

Gov. Tom Corbett was busy Friday trying to do damage control over a comment he made about gay marriage in a Harrisburg television interview.

The Republican governor of Pennsylvania was trying to distance himself from the argument made by his legal team in a brief comparing same-sex marriage to marriage between children.

Corbett tried to clear it up to WHP-TV’s Sherry Christian.

“It was an inappropriate analogy. I think a much better analogy would have been brother and sister, don’t you?” he said.

He offered no clarification in the interview, only in a press release and video apology later Friday.Corbett later said his comment during the WHP-TV morning news interview was meant to provide an example of the categories of people who aren’t legally entitled to obtain marriage licenses in Pennsylvania.

But the backlash was nearly instantaneous from Democratic candidates for governor.

The remark itself smacks of past gaffes he’s made concerning unemployment and women’s issues — comments that have been used mercilessly by his political opponents as evidence Corbett is out of touch.
