City Council honors St. Hubert’s after high school gets spared from closing

There were two reasons why City Council honored Saint Hubert Catholic High School for Girls at a Thursday session attended by students, teachers, officials and supporters. For one, the Torresdale Avenue mainstay is celebrating its 70th anniversary of educating students.  The other: How it fought to be able to celebrate a 71st.Sixth District Councilman Bobby Henon, who sponsored the resolution, noted that the Archdiocese had slated the school for closing in early January.

It took a 51-day fundraising-and-rallying push to raise the $1.3 million and unquantifiable spirit needed to stave off padlocks.“Your hard work, dedication and passion kept it open for quality education,” Henon said. “I’m proud to honor the anniversary and that.”Principal Regina King was among those at the meeting. She noted that the outstanding academic and athletic programs referenced before she spoke “was what made us worth fighting for.”Added Kathryn Ott Lovell, a seventh-generation alumnus involved in save-the-school efforts, “We are not a dying school and we will continue to prove this for many years to come.”In a related resolution, Council also honored the Father Judge High School cheerleading team for winning the National High School Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, Fla. in February.
