City clerk mistake puts Trenton’s mayoral race in limbo

A New Jersey judge is being asked to rule on whether candidates for mayor and city council in Trenton can stay on the ballot even though they didn’t gather as many signatures as required under state law.

The city clerk has filed court papers asking for the election to go ahead as scheduled, explaining that he had a mix-up and told candidates they needed fewer signatures to run than the law requires.

Several candidates have joined the motion from clerk Richard Kachmar.

Meanwhile, two current city council members are calling for Kachmar to be fired.
