Solistice at Smith Playhouse and more this weekend

    Horray! Summer is finally here. In many ancient cultures, the first day of summer, or the summer solstice, is embraced with ritual, celebration, and the blazing sun. The intense heat on this special day nearly made many is just want to “stand still” as the word solstice implies. Summer solstice is also known as a time of transformation. It’s a cycle in time when the seeds sown the season before, come to fruition.

     

    Summer solstice is also marked as the longest day of the year, with the sun being at its highest elevation. And more daylight means more time to enjoy what Phili has offer this summer. Here are a few great Saturday, June 23rd events to get you started:

    Smith Memorial Playground and Playhouse is hosting a special kid’s concert featuring The Cat’s Pajamas Saturday, June 23rd! Doors open at 6pm for fun on the Playground and rides down the slide.  The concert begins at 7pm on the lawn. Bring a blanket and a picnic for the show or purchase snacks from vendors at Smith.

     

    Free @ the Kimmel: Live from the Plaza Stage.  The last show in this program will feature local talent in a variety of genres, including instrumental ensembles and breathtaking dance troupes to amazing vocalists and exceptional jazz combos. Show starts at 6p.m.

     

    At 10 a.m., The Philadelphia Zoo is visiting FreePlay on the Parkway with their Little Zoo on Wheels. They will be presenting their “Fur, Feathers, Scales and Skin” program with live animals. Come out and enjoy this special presentation. As always, FreePlay programs are free and open to everyone.

     

    Take a dip with YIP! Young Involved Philadelphia is working with North Shore Beach Club this year to bring you a little summer fun by the pool. The Summer Jam is their annual summer party and celebration of arts and music in Philly. Come out and enjoy music, storytelling, an art action and raffle. Be sure to check the website for ticket information and schedule.

     

    There’s something about Germantown…Art Exhibit & Opening!  Imperfect Gallery, a new community-based exhibition space for local, national, and international artists, will open in Germantown with a special exhibit featuring all Germantown artists. There’s Something About Germantown… will feature over 30 artists that live in the Germantown neighborhood, kicking off the first in a three part inauguration of the new gallery, which is located at 5601 Greene Street. Free, from 5-10p.m. Contact 917-957-4504 for more information.

     

    The Manayunk Arts Festival in northwest Philadelphia is the tri-state region’s largest outdoor, juried arts festival. This is the 21st year of showcasing world-class fine arts and crafts.
