Bridge work

New Jersey’s got 202 structurally unsound bridges, according to a study by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign. The Route 52 bridge ranks as the state’s most dangerous.

Though new Jersey had 965 unsound bridges in 2002, the Route 52 bridge connecting Somers Point and Ocean City is in such disrepair it rates just 17 on the study’s zero to 100 safety scale, zero meaning the bridge needs immediate repair work.

Repairs for the bridge are being federally funded, and are scheduled for completion in 2010, the Press of Atlantic City Reports. But bridges with fewer problems may have a long wait ahead of them for renovations as the state’s Transportation Trust Fund is in severe debt.
