Barnegat man in critical but stable condition after early morning shooting

    Two men from Virginia are in police custody following a shooting in Barnegat early this morning that left a township man seriously injured, authorities said. 

    Al Della Fave, spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, says the two men were visiting a friend when they became involved in an argument with the shooting victim, ending with the parties separating. 

    The spokesman says the men later returned to the victim’s house at 379 N. Main Street and allegedly shot the 24-year-old once in the chest around 1 a.m. today as he exited his home. 

    He’s in critical, but stable condition at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus in Atlantic City, Della Fave said.

    According to the spokesman, law enforcement issued an area bulletin for the suspects after their descriptions were collected. An 18-year-old from Virginia was stopped by police in Stafford Township and the second Virginia man was arrested at a home on Brook Street in Barnegat.

    No names have been released and charges are pending, Della Fave said. 

    In a tweet at 2:09 a.m. today, the Barnegat Police Department advised residents in the downtown area to lock their doors an stay inside. A subsequent tweet providing suspect descriptions was issued at 2:14 a.m., followed by up an update at 2:51 a.m. that the men were in custody.
