An after hours lifeguard patrolling
An Ocean County beach patrol has resumed its after hours patrols for the summer season.
The Harvey Cedars Beach Patrol on Long Beach Island will once offer daily roving protection after lifeguards go off-duty during the late afternoon.
Beginning at 5 p.m. daily, lifeguards will be patrolling the municipal beaches until 8 p.m. Daily guarding begins at 10 a.m.
Harvey Cedars Beach Patrol Capt. Randy Townsend says most drowning deaths in New Jersey occur during the evening when lifeguards are off-duty, according to a posting on the patrol’s Facebook page.
“Our after hours unit is there to respond to calls, answer questions, and keep the beach/waters safe into the evening,” Townsend said.
Lifeguards in Harvey Cedars began daily protection of municipal beaches on Saturday. They offer limited protection from Memorial Day weekend through mid-June and then again after Labor Day.
The renewed patrol comes after multiple drownings on early evening unguarded beaches in New Jersey.
