A most valuable announcer for the Phillies

As the Phillies begin their playoff run, one man not in a uniform also will be on the field.

Dan Baker has been the Phillies stadium announcer for 40 years, watching every game from above home plate as he introduces the players to the fans with his unmistakable salutation: “Ladies and gentleman …”

After decades on the job with an up-close view of the various Phillies teams, Baker says there is some truth to the idea that this may be the best Philadelphia team of all time.

“The Phillies teams in the mid-70s had better hitting. This team has better pitching and you know what they say, the baseball purists say, good pitching can beat good hitting,” said Baker.

When he takes the field to announce the starting lineups, Baker says he’s still a fan at heart.

“When I hear that crowd reaction you know it’s just, oh my gosh, a very, very proud moment,” he said.

Baker will be busy this weekend. On Sunday, he will do both the Eagles and Phillies games.
