Small business owners expected to pay $500 for trash collection

Weekly Press: Small business owners expected to pay $500 for trash collection

Despite Mayor Nutter’s pledge “to take trash off the table” when addressing the city’s budget deficit last year, small business owners now have to pay an annual trash collection fee of $500. The new fee was part of the $3.8 billion budget bill passed by City Council in May.

The city’s rationale? By charging about 15,000 small businesses for trash collection (larger businesses are already required to hire private collectors), the city will generate more than $7 million a year.
