New Year, new red light cameras in Phila.

The Philadelphia Parking Authority has a present for drivers in the new year.  It  may not be exactly what drivers wanted.

New red light cameras will be installed on Aramingo Avenue, one at York Street the other at Castor Avenue.  Chris Vogler is manager of red light enforcement at the Philadelphia Parking Authority.

“The Aramingo Avenue business corridor has grown greatly over the past five years,” said Vogler.  “In the Southern end at York Street you have the Sugarhouse Casino along with a number of shopping centers, Wawa that weren’t there two, three years ago and at Castor and Aramingo that is the northern edge of the business zone.”

Vogler says the cameras will be used to issue warnings for the first two months and then tickets will be sent beginning March first.  There are now 85 cameras at 19 intersections in Philadelphia.  About 150,000 tickets are issued a year based on photos from red light cameras.
