A 3-year-old boy is in stable condition after his family dog seriously injured him yesterday evening in the Normandy Beach section of Toms River, police said.

Officers Chris Leighton and Dennis Mansfield responded to the 100 block of 4th Avenue in the barrier island community at 8:14 p.m, said Ralph Stocco, Toms River Police Department spokesman.

Upon arrival, police learned that the child was playing with the dog in the kitchen when he suffered a serious bite to his face, Stocco said in a release, adding that both parents were home.

The child was subsequently transported by a medevac to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he is currently in stable condition, according to Stocco.

The dog, which Stocco said initial reports identified as a mastiff, is in the custody of Toms River Animal Control for evaluation and observation.
