3 teens head to detention centers in beating of homeless man
Three juveniles are being remanded to juvenile detention centers in an attack at a North Philadelphia gas station that left a homeless man in a coma.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Common Pleas Judge Robert Rebstock on Tuesday ordered a 14-year-old boy to a secured juvenile facility in western Pennsylvania.
The judge sought more information, including psychiatric assessments, before deciding on the placement of a 12-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy.
The three pleaded guilty last month in Family Court to aggravated assault and conspiracy in the April 7 attack on 51-year-old Robert Barnes. Prosecutors dropped other counts, including attempted murder.
Assistant District Attorney Deborah Nixon said Barnes remains in a coma and has pneumonia and other infections. Three adult women have also been charged in the case.
