Philadelphia Democratic Party chair says John Street’s potential run for mayor is “not a joke”

The fall contest for Philadelphia Mayor could become more interesting. A potential independent candidate is making some moves.

Congressman Bob Brady, who is also head of the Philadelphia Democratic Party, said he sat down with former Mayor John Street to discuss Street’s potential independent run for mayor.

“We just had a cup of coffee, he is interested in running, it’s not a joke it’s for real,” said Brady.

Congressman Brady said having the former mayor running against his successor wouldn’t be the best thing for the Philadelphia Democratic Party.

“It will be a problem, naturally it will cause a lot of confusion, cause, we will lose the value of the first big button that you push to get everybody in, all Democrats,” he said.

Street has until August to gather 1,800 signatures necessary to run as an independent in the fall election.

Brady said instead of getting upset, he’s waiting to see if Street follows through and runs.
