2 youths shot near Philly’s Welcome America event

Two teenagers have been shot, one by a police officer, near the city’s Welcome America celebration in Center City.

Police spokesman Lt. Ray Evers says police saw a youth shoot a 17-year-old in the calf at about 9:30 p.m. last in the 1600 block of John F. Kennedy Boulevard. He says an officer pursued the suspect and fired once, grazing him in the chest.

The 16-year-old suspect and the 17-year-old victim both are in stable condition at a local hospital. No police officers were injured.

Near the site of the shooting, members of the Occupy movement, which protests economic inequality, were marching to City Hall and thousands were enjoying an evening of Independence Day concerts on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
