First for April 14, 2017

    First Experience: Howard Pyle’s murals
Howard Pyle is best known for his illustration work, but toward the end of his career he decided to branch out and paint murals. His first mural project was located in his home, where they were later damaged in a fire. These murals have languished in storage for years until they were recently restored, and are now on display together at the Delaware Art Museum. It’s a good place to start our program dedicated to Delaware’s arts and culture.

    First Experience: Milford Mural
In a couple weeks it will be time for the annual Bud and Bug Festival. It’ll take along the Misspillion River which cuts right through Milford. Volunteers and artists worked last year on a mural project celebrating Milford’s diversity, the mural is also a way to welcome residents and visitors alike to the town. Let’s meet the artists behind it.

    First person: Tina Betz
Tina Betz handled every cultural event in Wilmington during the Baker administration, she also played a big part in the refurbishing of the Queen Theater. Tina joins us in the First studios this week to talk about the Queen and more as our First Person guest this week.

    Foraging for Fun
The culture of Delaware isn’t just found in museums and music halls. It’s found outdoors too. There’s a group in Delaware who use their time in nature to take part in the age-old practice of foraging. See if you agree this demonstration is the perfect place to do it.

    Sikh Awareness Month
We continue with our special edition of First focusing on the arts and culture of the First State. We’re turning now to a segment highlighting the fact that April is Sikh Awareness Month. Here to talk about that is Charanjeet Singh Minhas and his daughter Jasmine.

    First Experience: Grant Massey
While attending art school, Grant Massey worked construction jobs to pay the bills. He continued in the building trade and worked for years building homes. Twenty years ago Grant decided it was time to try his art again. He never looked back. Combining glass, copper and wood he makes artwork in his Frankford, Delaware shop. First experience shows you Grant’s work.
