Olympics over for Wilmington swimmer Andrew Gemmell

Wilmington resident and Olympic swimmer Andrew Gemmell is getting his chance in the pool.

The 21-year-old will swim in the men’s 1,500 meter freestyle qualifying heat Friday. The final in the race is Saturday.

Update, 8:30 a.m. Gemmell finished third in his heat in the 1500m freestyle this morning with a time of 14:59.05. That was too slow to advance to the medal round and his Olympics are over.

Gemmell graduated from the Charter School of Wilmington in 2009 and is attending the University of Georgia, where he is majoring in economics. His father is a swim coach and his mother is an accountant.
