Will Peterkin-Bell make Nutter a Twitter star?

Desiree Peterkin-Bell is Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter’s new communications director. She helped raise the profile of Newark, NJ Mayor Corey Booker through social media.

A new communications director starts for the Nutter Administration in just under two weeks. She made a name for herself promoting the Mayor of Newark, New Jersey through social media.

Desiree Peterkin-Bell will take over a vacant position of Director of Communications and Strategic Partnerships in the Nutter Administration and wants to use new pathways to the public.

“I am committed to insuring that we identify as many ways as possible to use to use the assets that we have which are budget neutral, which means they don’t cost anything which means they exist or are free, quite frankly and we are going to be engaging in those anything from non-traditional media, social media to things that already exist within government like the municipal TV station.”

Mayor Michael Nutter justifies Bell’s $150,000 salary by saying the city, even in these difficult financial times, needs to have someone to get the message out to the people. By leaving the position vacant for some time, Nutter says the city has saved money.
