West Oak Lane man waives preliminary hearing in Chinese takeout owner’s fatal beating

A 23-year-old West Oak Lane man who severely beat a Chinese takeout owner two years ago is now facing a murder trial after the victim recently died of his injuries.

On June 8, 2010, Malik Niblack violently attacked Ji Cun Wu outside of his store on the 6600 block of N. Uber St.

After being knocked to the ground and kicked repeatedly, Wu, 44, was taken to the hospital. He would remain in doctor’s care over the next 21 months, never once going home. He died on March 15.

With Wu’s wife and two sons in the room, Niblack was held for trial Wednesday after he waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

Niblack had already been serving a six-to-15 year prison sentence after pleading guilty to attempted murder in connection to the summer beating. The murder charge was introduced after Wu’s death.
