Weekend News Briefs for April 9-11

Friday — A 19-year-old is dead following a shooting in Lawncrest Friday night. The man was shot in the neck and groin just after 8 p.m. on the 5900-block of Rising Sun Avenue. He was pronounced dead at Albert Einstein Medical Center. No arrest has been reported.

Saturday — Residents of Frankford participated in Philly’s Spring Cleanup Saturday afternoon, helping beautify their streets. Frankford Gazette has more details, and video on the third-annual event.

A 60-year-old man was found dead in Somerton Staurday night after a fire. Firefighters has the blaze on the 600-block of Lawler Place under control in less than 20 minutes, but once inside, they discovered the man’s body. There is no word yet on what caused the fire.

Sunday — Two 15th District police officers were injured in a car accident in Mayfair early Sunday morning. A police cruiser was broadsided by  another vehicle around 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of Brous Avenue and Hellerman Street. The officers, who were responding to a call at the time, became trapped in the car from the force of the impact. Both were treated and released from Aria Health-Torresdale. It’s unclear if the driver of the other vehicle will face charges.
