USDA: Pa. among top states for winter farmers markets

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the number of winter markets in its National Farmers Market Directory has increased 52 percent in the last year.

Pennsylvania can take some credit for that.

The state is No. 8 in the nation for its winter markets, behind No. 1 California and ahead of No. 10 Virginia. There are 58 winter markets in Pennsylvania. They give local farmers more opportunities to sell their goods, and allow consumers to sustain the shopping habits once reserved for warmer months.
