Two NEast papers fold

By Shannon McDonald

Two of the Northeast’s weekly newspapers, the News Gleaner and the Northeast Breeze, folded on Thursday, along with the Olney Times.

The papers, operated by Yardley’s Journal Register Co., published their final issues on Thursday without prior warning that this week would be their last.

“The suddenness of it was stunning,” Stuart London, former News Gleaner sports editor told the Daily News. “There was no farewell edition or anything on the Web site. We cleaned out our desks and left in two hours.”

The News Gleaner, formerly titled the Frankford News Gleaner, had in been in operation since 1882.

With the News Gleaner and Northeast Breeze dead, the only weekly paper serving our region is the Northeast Times.
