Two female Pa. inmates commit suicide

A central Pennsylvania coroner says two female inmates at the county prison hanged themselves in their cells within a week of each other.

The York County coroner’s office said a 23-year-old inmate died Sunday after hanging herself on Thursday 20 minutes after a routine check by York County Prison guards. Officials said a 46-year-old inmate was found unresponsive just after midnight Sunday and died Tuesday.

Both deaths were ruled suicides. Coroner Pam Gay said each woman used a bed sheet to hang herself. She said neither inmate was on suicide watch at the time.
