Diaper Derby and turtle races at annual Sea Isle festival

Not even out of diapers and Emily Sadowski already has a trophy.

She’s the daughter of WHYY promotions producer Tony Sadowski, and now also the proud winner of the Sara the Turtle Festival diaper derby.

The June 21 festival in Sea Isle City celebrated local wildlife and marked the dedication of Sara, the six-foot granite statue of a Diamondback Terrapin Turtle.
Following the dedication, parents placed their babies on a large tarp and coaxed them to be the first to cross the finish line. Emily came in first, followed by Toby Doron of Strathmere, N.J., and Layla Armstrong, of Pottstown, Pa.

Eleven kids, ages 2 to 12, won turtle races in their age groups. What’s next for Emily and her fellow derby winners? High school track stars and a future in the Olympics, certainly. But first: potty training.
