Trial ordered for Philadelphia officers accused of brutality
Two Philadelphia police officers accused of knocking a man off a scooter and beating him two years ago have been ordered to stand trial.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that a municipal judge’s ruling in the case Tuesday came after heated arguments by defense attorneys who said their clients had done nothing wrong.
Prosecutors allege that 30-old Sean McKnight and 29-year-old Kevin Robinson lied about the May 2013 encounter in north Philadelphia and accused 23-year-old Najee Rivera of attacking them.
McKnight’s attorney, Brian McMonagle, argued that Rivera resisted “a completely legal, legitimate demand” by the officers.
Robinson’s attorney, Fortunato Perri Jr., said that once Rivera had been placed under control, the physical confrontation ended.
Assistant District Attorney Andrew Wellbrock said surveillance video undercut every aspect of the officers’ statements.
