NJ governor says toll increases were a surprise

    He didn’t know, but he’s not saying no.

    NJ Gov. Chris Christie says he didn’t find out until last Wednesday about the plan to raise the tolls for travel between New Jersey and New York.

    Yesterday, Christie called claims he knew about it before then “speculation.” Democrats say it seems impossible that Christie would have been kept in the dark.

    As WHYY’s Phil Gregory reported, the Port Authority announced plans Friday to hike fares on bridges and tunnels between the two states by $4 in September. An additional $2 increase is planned for 2014.

    Christie or New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo could veto the proposal, but neither has announced a decision.
