Summer campers stung by wasps in Delaware

Wasps stung a dozen New Castle County children during a picnic at Rockwood Park and Museum on Wednesday morning.

The kids were among 200 New Castle County summer campers, ranging in ages from 7 to 12. Three children were taken to nearby A.I. duPont Hospital for Children, while another nine were treated on-site for stings by county paramedics.

“It’s a shame that children on a fun trip outdoors had to have this misfortune bestowed upon them,” said County Executive Tom Gordon, who went to Rockwood to check on the children. “I am happy to hear everyone is doing better.”

Parents picked up their children, including the three who were treated and released from the hospital. 

County officials blocked off the area with caution tape, until exterminators arrived and cleared the nest.

“We plan to get the children ice cream on Friday,” Gordon said. “That’s a better way to celebrate the end of summer.”
