Suit: Refusal to deliver on Sabbath cost contract

A central Pennsylvania businessman claims he lost a contract with a baking company because he’s a Seventh-day Adventist who refuses to deliver on Saturdays.

The Patriot-News of Harrisburg reports Nathaniel Hawkins is suing Tasty Baking Co. and Giant Foods for $1.8 million over the cancellation of his delivery contract.

Hawkins says Tasty Baking canceled his contract in the spring because his religious beliefs don’t allow him to conduct deliveries on the Sabbath. He’s also claiming racial discrimination.

Tasty Baking denies discriminating against Hawkins. The company says his service just wasn’t up to its standards.
