Staffing shuffle at one school prompts layoffs in Christina School District

More than a dozen Christina School District elementary school teachers are being laid off, the result of a staffing shuffle at Bancroft Elementary School.

The district’s school board voted 4-3 Tuesday to serve the layoff notices. Teachers are being bumped out of jobs by Bancroft teachers who opted to transfer out of the school.
Bancroft has struggled with low student performance on math and reading assessments. As a result, teachers were given the chance to voluntarily transfer out of the school or reapply for their jobs. More than half the school’s staff is leaving.

The teachers being served layoff notices are being encouraged to apply for open jobs at Bancroft.

The Christina School District is Delaware’s largest public school system with more than 16,000 students.
