Smell of Bucks chemical plant fire wafts into New Jersey

“There is a terrible chemical smell in Burlington City right now,” a reader said in an email to NewsWorks early this morning.

Burlington City is just across the Delaware River from Bristol, Pa., where a lightning bolt set fire to the Dow Chemical plant early Wednesday.
The Times of Trenton reports residents in nearby New Jersey towns were warned to stay inside as the fumes drifted across the river.

As Dow explained, the smell came from ethyl acrylate and butyl acrylate – paint ingredients. The company said the fumes act as irritants, but are not toxic.
