Schools, synagogue oppose proposed Philly casino
A synagogue and two schools near the site of a proposed casino in Philadelphia are taking action to block the project.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Congregation Rodeph Shalom, Friends Select School and Mathematics, and the Civics and Sciences Charter School on Thursday filed a petition with the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Commission opposing the proposed casino.
The institutions say the Provence Casino, proposed by developer Bart Blatstein’s Tower Investments, would be incompatible with the synagogue and schools.
The 424,000-square-feet project would include a casino, concert hall, restaurants, and a nightclub at the former home of The Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News.
Tower Investments spokesman Frank Keel says they’re puzzled by the petition, since they’ve met with community groups and worked on a significant security plan.
