Brady, Fitzpatrick to join in protest, rally against mail service cuts
Opponents of the federal plan to end Saturday mail deliveries intend to make their point Sunday in Philadelphia.
Congressmen Bob Brady of Philadelphia and Mike Fitzpatrick of Bucks County are joining in the protest against cutting postal delivery to five days a week.
The cutback, Brady says, would hurt many.
“It delays the mail one more day,” he said. “It hurts American businesses where every penny counts. When they get their advertisements out on Saturdays, it’s a good day. People sit down and read it when it gets there.
“It eliminates jobs … we are going to lose 22,000 jobs across the country,” he said. “It makes no sense to me.”
Brady said he was happy to team up with Fitzpatrick, a Republican, on the issue — even if they disagree much of the time.
“Fitzpatrick’s a friend,” Brady said. “Look, he has his different philosophies and so do I. But that doesn’t mean we’re not friendly. We work together on a number of issues. He’s a labor vote from time to time and he’s on top this and he agrees with me that it would hurt.”
The change in mail service is set to take effect in August.
