Fundraiser brings in nearly $3,000 for community greening

Volunteers from East Falls, Manayunk, Roxborough, Shawmont and Lower Merion all gathered at Bourbon Blue in Manayunk on Saturday night for the first “Hang out to help out” event organized by Destination Schuylkill River and the Manayunk Development Corporation.

Garrett Elwood, director of economic development at the MDC, said the event raised about $3,000, which will be used to support greening and recreation on both sides of the Schuylkill River.

“More than anything, I’m appreciative of the hard working volunteers who really made this happen,” Elwood said.

The event featured live bluegrass music from the Keystone Mountain Boys and a silent auction, which showcased works from Orbit Art Gallery, Celeste Hardester Photography and Shaun Yasaki.

The funds raised will help local volunteer groups pay for tools, plant materials and supplies.

Elwood said the next fundraiser will most likely be in Lower Merion to celebrate the work those groups are doing with the trail, which will soon connect the two communities via the Manayunk Bridge.
