Putin’s long ultranational nightmare

Having once proclaimed the demise of the Soviet Union as the greatest catastrophe of the twentieth century, Vladimir Putin appears to be trying to resurrect a rump version of that truly evil empire.

The USSR was one of history’s great tragedies, imprisoning millions of people, with millions of deaths on its hands.

Having gobbled up Crimea, Putin appears to be orchestrating unrest in eastern Ukraine, generating strife so he can justify an invasion to “protect” Russian-speaking “victims” of the “fascist” government of Ukraine.

As painful as Putin’s exercise in internationalist bravado may be, It’s doomed to failure. It is a dream shared by almost no one.
