Public hearing

A state Senate committee will be holding a public hearing in Philadelphia to address concerns about state and local government oversight of abortion clinics.

Republican state Sen. John H. Eichelberger Jr. scheduled Thursday’s hearing at Drexel University. Eichelberger, who opposes abortion rights, chairs the Senate’s local government committee.

The hearing comes in response to concerns raised in a gruesome grand jury report in January that charged Dr. Kermit Gosnell with murder in the deaths of a patient and seven late-term babies who prosecutors say were born alive and were killed.

The grand jury described Gosnell’s west Philadelphia clinic as a “house of horrors.” It also severely rebuked the state’s Department of Health for failing to shut the clinic down despite repeated reports of horrific conditions.
