PSU trustee candidates stump for election at spring football

Penn State alumni vying for a spot on the school’s Board of Trustees handed out buttons and flyers while campaigning for votes before the annual spring football scrimmage Saturday.

It’s the biggest event during the monthlong election period that closes May 2.

Thirty-nine candidates are on the ballot for three board seats. Online voting began more than two weeks ago.

The race once generated little interest, but that changed in the aftermath of the child sex abuse scandal that started following former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky’s arrest in November 2011.

Many candidates say they want to reform leadership and promote alumni interests. Most also say they’re also focusing on other fiscal and academic issues affecting the university’s future.

Nearly 22,000 ballots have been cast so far in this year’s election.
