Police: Fake kidnapping calls scam, victimize residents

A phone scam that police say may have originated in New York has made its way to suburban Philadelphia.

The (Doylestown) Intelligencer reports police are warning residents of a scam involving a man who calls claiming to be holding a sibling hostage for ransom. Authorities say in some cases, the callers say they’ve been in an accident with a family member and are holding them at gunpoint, demanding $950 from the person on the other end of the line.

Solebury Police Cpl. Jonathan Koretzky says residents should call 911 if they receive similar phone calls. He urges any victims of this scam to ensure their family members are safe and to not relent to the caller’s demands.

The FBI issued a warning about this type of scam in January.
