PHOTOS: Clean up underway at Joey Harrison’s Surf Club in Ortley Beach

The clean up is underway at the Joey Harrison’s Surf Club property in Ortley Beach.

The iconic oceanfront club, a Seaside-area fixture for decades, was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012, remaining in disrepair since.

A worker was operating heavy machinery on the beach and crews were inside the structure Tuesday morning.

But the club’s future remains unclear.

After over a year of rumors and speculation, an update was posted on the club’s Facebook page on May 3:

Hello friends of Surf Club. The Surf Club would like you to know that as soon as we have news on the rebuild we will let you know. The owner is working hard on rectifying all matters that have been delaying the process.

When reached Tuesday morning and asked whether the club would be rebuilt, Joseph Barcellona Jr., son of owner Joseph Barcellona Sr., said “no comment.”
