Philly GOP elects a new chairman: legitimacy in question

Last night, ward leaders of the Philadelphia Republican Party met in a Northern Liberties church to nominate a new chairman. Members nominated then quickly elected Rick Hellberg as Chairman.

But not everyone agrees with the decision.

The local GOP maintains that former Chair Vito Canuso still holds the seat, making Hellberg’s nomination illegitimate. However, the state declared the seat open, citing past irregularities in the election of Canuso, which would make Hellberg’s claim valid.

According to Philly Weekly, the election was needed “after apparent former Chair Vito Canuso’s last election was contested.”
