Phillies broadcaster Gary ‘Sarge’ Matthews prepares seafood meal for fans [photos]

Phillies broadcaster and former outfielder Gary “Sarge” Matthews prepared a lunchtime treat for baseball fans and seafood fans alike at Reading Terminal Market Tuesday. Matthews guided spectators through the preparation of his shrimp and king crab chowder in sourdough bread bowls, and then handed out samples.

Media and spectators crowded La Cucina demonstration kitchen as Matthews chopped vegetables and boiled potatoes, but before getting down to business, he signed a baseball for a fan.

Seated at a front-row table, Domenic and Alex Spataro, who run a sandwich shop at the market, came for the man, not the soup.”He’s such a gentleman, he always comes by the store to say hello,” Domenic Spataro said. “In sports today, that’s something unique.”
