Philadelphia School District still has 1,000 teacher positions to fill

With just a few weeks before the start of the school year, the School District of Philadelphia still has a lot of work to do. Like filling more than 1,000 teaching jobs.

That task begins tomorrow when forced- and voluntary-transfer teachers will begin selecting their positions based on seniority. The district’s nine Promise Academies will fill their vacancies, too.

As the Notebook reports, there’s been no decision yet by the arbitrator on whether existing Promise Academy teachers can be protected from district layoffs. Hiring won’t be complete until those 174 positions are clarified.
