Patriot-News calls for Spanier’s exit as Penn State president

Update, 4:30 p.m. Paterno’s son Scott tells reporters a New York Times story about the university and Paterno negotiating the coach’s exit is untrue. Fox29 has video of Paterno after his canceled press conference, where the coach said he hopes to hold a press conference soon.

Update PSU President Graham Spanier’s office has canceled the press conference coach Joe Paterno was supposed to have today. The Associated Press reports Paterno was prepared to take questions not just about the upcoming game, but about the allegations and investigation. His son, Scott Paterno, says the coach is disappointed.

The Patriot-News editorial board this morning called for the resignation of Penn State President Graham Spanier. And if Spanier won’t remove himself, the paper wants the Board of Trustees to make that call.

“It has become increasingly clear that while Penn State University President Graham Spanier has not been charged with breaking any laws, he did not do what is right — for his school or, more importantly, for the alleged victims of coaching legend Jerry Sandusky,” the editorial reads.

 

Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly said yesterday she couldn’t say whether Spanier is a target of the investigation that stems from allegations against former football defensive coordinator Sandusky. He’s charged with sexually abusing eight boys through a charity program he ran, and two university officials are charged for failing to report witness accounts of abuse.

Kelly did say yesterday football coach Joe Paterno is not a target of the investigation, but the Patriot-News says this should be the legend’s last season. Paterno reported what a witness told him to his boss, but did not follow up with authorities.
